Perfect Timing

Two days before my Molecular and Cellular Medicine final, I found out I was pregnant.

We'd been trying to start a pregnancy for a while, and had opted to begin hormonal therapy (Clomid) to try and stimulate ovulation. I decided to start the medication on a Friday - that way, I would have completed my exam and have the weekend to rest, in case the meds knocked me out. But before I started, I had to take a pregnancy test. I decided on the off-chance that it was positive, I didn't want to find out an hour before my exam, so I took the test on Wednesday rather than Friday.

Now, when you're not pregnant, the tests tick along slowly and you're thinking "come on, come on - be a '+', be a …. it's negative." Apparently, positive results tick off much faster.  My husband was still asleep, and I was sitting in the bathroom, staring at the little clock on the disposable digital meter when suddenly, much faster than I anticipated, three little letters appeared.

Gasp. Baby en route. Due date - June 11th - day after the last final exam of Harvard Med, Year I.
